The Living Monument of Biron A sculpture in public space (Biron, France 1996) German artist Jochen Gerz, who has lived in Paris since 1966, is working with students of the Art College of Bordeaux on a new sculpture in public space. The Ministry of Culture Commission is a project for the replacement of the monument to the dead in the village of Biron, erected in the 1920s in commemoration of the First World War. Biron is situated in the Dordogne (France), an area which experienced the war crimes of 1943-44. "The Living Monument of Biron" brings together on the existing monument all the adult inhabitants' answers to a secret question asked by the artist. The future adults and the newcomers to Biron will be asked the same question and the Monument will remain a "work in progress". The answers talk about values and the worth of life today, of such ideas as freedom, love of France, of Europe, but also of memories of the past and the two World Wars. Jochen Gerz adds this sculpture to his series of monuments and interactive sculptures in public space: "The Monument Against Fascism", Hamburg, 1986 (Esther and Jochen Gerz), and "2146 Stones - Monument Against Racism", Saarbrucken, 1993. More recently, "The Bremen Questionnaire / Sino Somno Nihil" was finished in Bremen in 1995. Since his contribution to the 1976 Biennal in Venice with "The Centaur's Difficulty when Dismounting The Horse", Jochen Gerz is internationally renowned as an artist. The "Living Monument of Biron" will be unveiled on in the presence of the delegate of Visual Arts for the Ministry of Culture, Jean-Frangois de Canchy. |
